PES welcomes release of Gilad Shalit

Thursday, October 13, 2011 - 00:00

The PES is strongly encouraged by the agreement reached between the Israeli government and Hamas for the release of Gilad Shalit and Palestinian prisoners.
After five years in captivity, the PES is pleased to see that Mr. Shalit will return to his family and hopefully in good health. With the release of Mr. Shalit also comes the release of 1027 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. Including all 27 women held in Israeli prisons. The PES would also like to extend congratulations to the families of these prisoners.

The PES hopes that following this momentous occasion there can now be a return to negotiations. Both sides have shown an ability to compromise and work together to find a solution. The PES would also like to congratulate the Egyptians for their ability to broker this deal effectively.

Philip Cordery, PES Secretary general has stated that “I am happy for the family of Gilad Shalit, whose capture since 2006 is now finally coming to an end. I would like to extend my greetings to the families of the Palestinian prisoners. This is a very positive step forward. One step closer to a return to open and frank negotiations, which is urgent, to bring peace and security on both sides.”.
