The PES supports the democratic aspirations of all Bahraini citizens
The release of the report of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) on 23 November 2011 has confirmed that repression of Bahraini citizens resulting in torture and deaths have occurred since the beginning of revolutions in the country. Furthermore, the BICI reviewed all aspects of violations of rights in Bahrain in the time period of February and March 2011. The Bahraini regime has put in place a Commission to report on the findings of the BICI.
The report based its interpretation of events on Bahraini law as well as customary International Law including the Convention Against Torture, and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment to which Bahrain is a signatory State. The PES welcomes this report as a first step towards revealing the truth of the violent repression of Bahraini citizens since February.
Demonstrations are ongoing in Bahrain due to the belief that things will not actually change despite the report of the BICI and the forthcoming report of the new Commission that is being put in place by the regime. The PES urges the Bahraini regime to allow for real reform to take place following the suggestions of the Commission and the recommendations of the BICI.
The retrial of medical personnel, arrested at the Salmaniya Hospital for treating patients during the protests in February and March, is continuing despite testimonies that were taken under torture being excluded as evidence. The PES reaffirms its belief that the Bahraini regime must allow for public and transparent court cases to uphold fundamental human rights of Bahraini citizens. For this to be achieved the judiciary must be independent of all the other branches of government.
PES Secretary General Philip Cordery has stated that “the Bahraini people are looking for democracy and real reform in their country. The regime should allow for democratic reform and the will of the people to be heard. The PES supports the democratic aspirations of all Bahraini citizens”.
