EU - Peru Trade Agreement

"Peru must take advantage of EU Trade Agreement to strenghten social rights" says SWOBODA in Lima.

After intensive talks in Lima with official representatives including the President, the Prime-Minister and the ministers for foreign affairs and trade, the leader of the S&D group, Hannes Swoboda, expressed satisfaction at Peru's willingness to use the trade agreement with the EU to enhance a balanced economic and social development. In discussions with the Minister for Social Inclusion, the fight against poverty was especially underlined.

During the meeting with representatives from civil society and the labour unions, the need to monitor the development of human rights as well as the environmental consequences of the economic development were seen to be of common interest to the people of Peru and the EU.

The rapporteur for the EU - Peru trade agreement, Bernd Lange, fully supported and will observe the implementation process in the framework of the agreed roadmap. In about a year, together with all actors in Peru we will make an assessment of the progress in implementing the road map.

Spanish MEP Luis Yanez underlined Peru's important role in the different Latin American regional cooperation bodies. Peru, which currently chairs Unasur, has a key role to play in preparing the way for stronger economic and political cooperation.

The visits to Columbia and Peru have shown how important it is to strengthen the economic and political ties between the EU and these two "rising stars" in South America. But the EU, and especially the EU Parliament, with the S&D group taking the lead, will use this stronger cooperation for enhancing the human dimension, including the social rights of the local population. For us, trade is an important instrument for development and social inclusion.
