FES Israel: Israel Debates No.10 - Is Israel’s democracy in danger? The controversial proposed legislation of the ruling right-wing coalition
“Israel Debates” is an online publication by the FES Office Israel in which two Israeli authors express their contrasting views on significant events and developments in Israeli domestic and foreign politics. Our objective is to give readers a “true face” rendition of the controversial political debates in Israel by presenting the views of two authors who play an important role in the country’s political discourse. You will find “Israel Debates” on the FES Israel site (www.fes.org.il). „Israel Debates“ No. 10 deals with the topic „Is Israel’s democracy in danger? The controversial proposed legislation of the ruling right-wing coalition“. These legal initiatives which were introduced mainly by Likud and Yisrael Beitenu Members of Knesset have stirred intense debate within Israel and caused serious irritation by the international community. For the opposition and its supporters, the bills constitute an attack on democratic principles as well as a danger to the liberal nature of Israel’s society. The initiators on the other hand remain of the conviction that the bills mirror the Israeli majority’s opinion and significantly contribute to strengthening the Jewish nature of state and society. Prof. Mordechai Kremnitzer, Vice-President of the Israel Democracy Institute in cooperation with Shiri Krebs and Amir Fuchs, and Emily Amrousi, journalist and columnist of the daily „Israel HaYom“ analyze the situation drawing very different conclusions.
