Democratic Challenges of Turkey in Europe, Istanbul, 22-23 November

On 22 and 23 November 2013, the Global Progressive Forum and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Istanbul, with the support of the S&D Group, organised a conference to discuss the present and future democratic challenges of Turkey, both internally and within Europe. The S&D Delegation was composed of the President and Vice-President of the S&D Group, Hannes Swoboda and Libor Roucek, respectively, the S&D Vice-Chair of the Delegation to the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee, Maria Eleni Koppa, and the Secretary General of the GPF, Javier Moreno Sánchez.

Swoboda in Syrian refugee plenary debate: "EU must offer opportunities in this tragedy"

In today's plenary session, the European Parliament discussed how the EU and member states can tackle the flow of refugees resulting from the conflict in Syria.

 

Speaking in the debate, Hannes Swoboda, president of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, said:

 

Annual report on human rights in the world: EU must speak with one voice

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament welcomed the adoption of the Annual report on human rights in the world. However, they also underlined the need for improved co-operation and co-ordination between the EU and its member states in this area, to strengthen EU human rights policy and to speak with one voice.

S&Ds welcome appointment of Stavros Lambrinidis as first EU Special Representative for Human Rights

The European Council yesterday appointed former European Parliament vice-president Stavros Lambrinidis as the first EU Special Representative for Human Rights. The newly created role will ensure increased visibility and efficiency for EU human rights policy.

PES President Sergei Stanishev and leader of S&D Group Hannes Swoboda met with Serbian President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister of Serbia Mirko Cvetkovic in Belgrade. The delegation praised the domestic achievements of Tadic’s government and the strong push towards European integration. The meetings took place ahead of the general elections.
 

GPF Secretary General participates in conference on Free Trade and Decent Work

The Secretary General of the Global Progressive Forum, Javier Moreno Sanchez, participated in a conference titled “Beyond free trade: alternatives for decent work”, organized by War on Want, UK, Weed, Germany and WIDE, Belgium in cooperation with several trade unions and organizations.

The first plenary session, which took place on October 5th in Brussels, witnessed the presence of international guests including trade union representatives, NGO members and numerous activists from civil society.

Can trade policy improve human rights?

The Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists & Democrats in the European Parliament is holding a conference on the topic of trade policy and human rights.
